What an excellent production! I can't imagine the work that goes into each gripping episode. The heart. The humor. The acting. The action. The four of us snuggle up, cheer for our heroes, and cringe at the creatures. I especially love when Gais, the wise court physician prepares his potions and herbal preparations. We've begun reading the King Arthur adventures as well. It's all so fun.

My Merlin obsession is bleeding into my recent sewing obsession. I'm enchanted with Camelot, knights, and magic. I love these whimsical patterns and think we'll need some pajama pants before the 4th season hits our Netflix stream.

We're starting the 3rd season tonight. I hope we'll be seeing more of Sir Lancelot. I'm willing to bet that gardening not only helps us live longer, but promotes a specific vitality that benefits our spirit and minds. It's not just the physical fitness that comes from gardening. Nor is it the vital nature of incorporating home grown fruits and veggies. These things do contribute to good health of course, but I'm suggesting that gardening increases vitality and longevity because it's an activity that activiely incorporates all of the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water).

When we garden we're working actively working and depending on these elements. We connect with the earth and nurture the soil with minerals, we depend on the sun and water to nourish the roots so our plants can develop to their full potential. Gardening is a patient and humbling process, doing what we can, but letting nature do the rest. Gardening not only helps us connect with the elements in raw form, but also helps us to be in tune with the seasons, and nature's cycles. Even composting allows us to become an active participant in the natural process of recycling.

My Grandmother is my gardening mentor and first taught me how to container garden. I lived in a second floor apartment with a small back porch. I have fond memories of putting those containers together. We would work all day and be delighted with how it came together. When I moved into my first home, gardening in the ground was a mystery. After several years, I could finally say "I get it."

Here's a little breakdown of my garden projects over the last couple of years. The heart of gardening comes from maintanence. It's the work involved that allows us to wholly benefit from yard work and gardening.

We started with our hardscape and removed a concrete walk, put in a fence, an exposed aggregate patio, and a pergola. The flagstone was a creative solution to a contracting disaster.

Hanging planters helped tame the height of this pergola. This year, I want full sun, drought tolerant plants and am open to suggestions.

I love creating a tropical feel with plants in containers. This way we can bring the outdoors in for the colder months. This serving cart was a great find from Exquisite Revisit in Berwyn, and has been a handy, moveable peice. It might be ready for a fun coat of color.

I decided on dark plum/light green theme. Choosing a theme really allowed me to narrow down the overwhelming choices. My favorite purchases were the smoke tree and a bright greeen yucca plant. I highly recommend yuccas for their Summer and Winter interest. The rest of the plants were almost entirely from friends and my Grandmother's gardens. The immortal nature of gardening supports my longevity theory.

We inherited the sculpture from my brother and his ex-wife. The iron urn in the corner was for our 6th anniversary. Rusty metal works for my dark/light theme. Sculpture and garden art add visual interest and create more surface for containing plants and support vines for height. The stone lion is my favorite piece in my garden.

This year I'll be planting vegetables in pots. I haven't quite tackled the farming element of gardens.
A detox program can really help set our own reset button. This program has allowed me to see what I need to live a more vital life. For starters, I need more fruits and vegetables at every meal and in between. I also need to take more time for reflection and meditation.

I've been asking my spirit guides for more clarity, and shortly afterwards I started this cleanse. It's not an easy process, and it's hard to make time for it. This is not something you can do with a packed social or heavy work schedule. Time opened up and I knew it would be the right time for me to focus on myself. I also signed up for a continuing education seminar on the therapeutic uses of essential oils that would take place over the entire weekend. Closing the fast with a learning experience seemed like the right thing to do.

Here's how the week played out. I continued to drink the juices. Making my own recipes with what I had on hand, and following the recipes from this site. I LOVED juicing a little piece of ginger, celery, pear, spinach, and cucumber. It was probably my favorite of the bunch. But, the cashew milk was surprisingly difficult to get down. I wouldn't recommend it.

For 2.5 days I had a caffeine withdrawal headache. This didn't surprise me and didn't really bother me so much. I know there are things you can do to make this easier, but I chose to suffer through it. My joints and especially my back and spine were achy and tight. Walking and stretching, twisting in particular, were necessary to loosen up stiff joints. This walk by my favorite local nature spot was particularly helpful in this healing phase. The winding path, the flowing river, and the birdsongs were particularly meaningful and symbolic to me.

The cleansing process is a process that wrings out the baggage stored in our bodies. There's a healing reaction that takes place during this time. Basically, you feel worse before you feel better. If there's an imbalance in your health than that thing will be exaggerated, whether it's headaches, low-energy, sinus congestion etc.. For me, it's fatigue, low-energy, and mood swings. It came as no surprise to me that I needed to have short naps several times during the day. I was also irritable, and had a strong need for silence and space. I felt calm and somewhat content knowing that I was undergoing this healing reaction.

The Toxins Must Exit...

They exit through the skin, bowels, and really any way they can. My skin was rutty and blotchy for a few days, but has become smooth and clear. My eyes feel brighter. Your likely to have bad breath and a white tongue coating during a cleanse. I looked in the mirror and was SHOCKED by my tongue coat. I've never seen my tongue with this thick of coat before and began scraping as suggested. I wanted to gag, it was disgusting. My family attested to the halitosis as well!

The toxins will also remove themselves through the bowels. But when your juicing there's really nothing to push the excrement down. The left over fibre material shows us why we need to eat the produce more than we need to juice on a regular basis. Hence, many fasting programs recommend enemas.

I did the enema, but realized at the end of the cleanse that the disposable enemas at the pharmacy are not the best for this cause. The problem with this type is there isn't enough fluids or water to flush through the entire colon for an actual cleanse. That's probably the main difference between the enema and the colonic. A colonic will flush through 25-50 gallons of water through the entire large intestines! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one, even though many people think it's unnatural to have fluids moving in a upward direction when nature wants things to move down.

My opinion is that the digestive organs are at the center of our health. If there's something off with our health, we must look here first. In the case of serious or chronic illness, I think someone could greatly benefit from colonics or enemas. But, it needs to be done correctly and by a skilled practitioner.

The hard work is over. Now what?

I'm feeling so good and am excited about taking extra efforts to sustain this feeling. I'm looking forward to my CSA veggies this summer. Susan and I are sharing a box, so I'm looking forward to finding recipes and experimenting with new dishes. I've also decided to take a hiatus from my beloved coffee. Coffee has been a staple in my diet from a young age. I'm not saying I'll never go back, or visit my friend again, but for the moment I'm testing these waters.

Mostly, I'm bewildered that I've been asking the Universe for some clarity. Things are changing in my life. These transitions can be exciting, but can also be very challenging - mentally and emotionally. (I'll share more about this in the coming months. I know we all go through phases and it helps to know we're not alone.) Right now, I still don't have all the answers, but I feel I've been given some information that will help me get closer to them.

Overall...

Through this process alone, I feel more clear. I don't feel panicked, instead I'm patient and accepting. I'm enjoying some new energy and love how good I'm feeling.

I'm enjoying this book right now, that's giving me some meditative exercises to further my quest for discovering my destiny.

My weekend class on the therapeutic use of essential oils has also helped to inspire me and help me through a little burn-out phase. I'm excited about being creative with the oils and using them in my practice. In this class, I also met a new friend and connected with an old friend that made the whole thing extra worthwhile.

It's bewildering to me that when we ask for something, it can come. Maybe not addressed in an envelope, but through a process that unfolds over time. When we're clear, we can be conscious of this process unfolding. It's here we can find joy and peace that comes from knowing this is exactly where I need to be at this moment in time. In due time the path will become clear.

That sort of sums up my desire for a Spring cleanse. Not just an internal break for my innards, but a way to clear my head and re-focus for some changes to come.

Remember when my friend Susan and I did the last cleanse? Susan has done three fasts since then! She's a pro now and was kind enough to lend me her Champion juicer.

I knew it was time for another fast because of the following reasons:

It's been two years since the last one.

My stomach was creating havoc with random bouts of nausea. I even thought I was pregnant for a split second there!! I'm not.

My bowels were telling me something was off.

I was consistently waking up crabby. Who needs that?

My eating habits were slipping, and I was becoming lazy about eating well.

I've been feeling stuck - mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Hence the expression. I knew a little reset would refresh my body and mind.

I'm not a religious person, but I admire the fasting practices of different religions. There's something about sacrificing one of our greatest pleasures in life for a period of time. For me, this is what I love about the fasting process, it really brings you to the moment.

We use the 7-day cleansing protocol found in the Prescription for Nutrional Healing. It's a detox cleanse that safely builds up to a 3-day juicing fast, and slowly brings you back with raw food on both ends of the fast. The first day is the hardest to accept in my opinion. Once you get through Monday and see how raw fruits and vegetables all day is fine and satisfying enough, you're on board. You'll get through Tuesday and will already have put enough energy into the process that you'll have the power to go forward and finish.

One of the most wonderful aspects of an Internal Spring clean is it's ability to reset your diet. Honestly, I enjoy food too much to be the healthiest eater. We love comfort food in our house. As long as it's home made, it's all good with me. But, when it becomes a little too normal instead of a satisfying treat, it's time to reset. Last weekend was a pizza, donut, and birthday cake filled weekend. Enough was enough. I was ready to get started.

Here's what I basically ate for the first two days. I'd start the day with a lemon and salt tea and fruit.

This avocado mashed with crudite is a perfect lunch or snack.

This salad was satisfying and delicious! I dressed it with a 2:1 Olive oil-balsamic dressing.

Today is my first day on the juice cleanse, and I began the day turning this...

Lunch was a naked juice from the gym. Then my dinner juice was this...

and so on for the next three days....

This year I'll be adding this to the program. I'm gearing up!

One thing that cluttered my mind was my desire to sew. I would look at some cute, overpriced item and think to myself..."I can sew this!". Everytime I look to buy window treatments, I usually think to myself when I'm passing them up..."I'll sew my own". So, I went ahead and bought a Singer. I moved it around the house until it finally landed in the basement, where it remained lonely and untouched for eight long years.

Until now...The opportunity came up and I signed up for a beginner sewing class at my local park district. We began with a simple apron, and learned to read a pattern as well as use the machine. I learned I wasn't the only one who put off their life-long desire to learn how to sew. It was liberating to learn how to finally just learn how to use our machines! The feeling of piecing material together was actually a relief.

I'm always telling people how important it is to channel energy into something creative. It's important to let go of the day to day struggles and sink our teeth into something fun. Creative work allows us the satisfaction of having turning an idea into something real and tangible.

Here's my finished work! I'm so excited about my new skills that I've banished all toys to the basement and will convert the toy closet into a craft closet. Talk about liberating! What have you been wanting to do?

A special thanks to Nancy for her excellent instruction. By the way, I was totally engrossed in this WTTW program the other night...It's called "Sewing with Nancy".

We carry the spirit energy from our ancestors just like we carry their genetic material in our DNA. This area is about understanding where we come from, acknowledging our heritage, and allowing the wisdom of our ancestors to support us.

The energy of Thunder rises up and represents Spring, new beginnings, and the start of a new cycle. This also means that any unresolved family issues may be keeping you from starting something new.

Clutter in this area can be symbolic of holding on to things from our past that don't serve any purpose. Clearing this space can be cathartic and open ourselves to create the life we want.

Sounds in our home from electronics to our voices vibrate sound- thunder energy. If Noisy neighbors are a problem, use a tall plant to balance this unwanted energy.

Thunder is associated with tree energy represented by the color green, plants, pictures of woodland, tall furniture, and actual symbols of support like pillars.

Here are a few examples...

My other child, on the other hand is picky and challenges my mental state of mind.

I've learned a no-nonsense approach is the only option with our picky eater. I consider it my duty as a parent to teach and demonstrate how to make healthy choices. It hasn't been easy.

Here are my no-nonsense food rules:

I'm not a short order chef. We'll eat what I make and that's it.

One bite rule: You can't say you don't like it if you don't try it.

No crying at the table. You cry, Good bye! We've let her cry and cry and tried to ignore her. But, if we remove her instantly she almost always comes back ready to eat. It's the band-aid effect

No toys at the table. I really don't like toys in the kitchen at all. But, toys at the table is a distraction and has served us well in public restaurants as well. (Crayons and placemats is the exception)

We eat at the table. Eating at the table is a way to practice mindful eating and good for the whole family. Walking around with food or eating in front of the t.v. is mindless eating and creates bad habits.

The husband and I are a team. If he threatens dinner for breakfast. Dinner must be for breakfast. One bite. As challenging as this one can be, I'm strong and steadfast. When she does take the measly bite, it's over and we can move on.

It's my job as a Mom to feed my kids what's best for their growing minds and bodies. I won't compromise or back down from this commitment.

I Choose my battles. She won't eat fruit, but she'll drink fruit "shakes". I can blend it up, no problem.

It's not about fat vs. skinny. Instead I use the "green light, yellow light, red light" approach and find this makes the most sense. We can have it all, in the right amounts.

Good habits start with me. I'm the example for moderation. I eat well and I choose fruit and vegetables for snacks. But I enjoy cake too. The kids see me bake, enjoy baked goods, and watch me give them away.

I'm the example. I exercise.

Food shouldn't be a reward. I've done this and internally cringed knowing I'm making a mistake. It happens and will probably happen again. There's a learning curve here.

Come to the table hungry. Absolutely no dry snacks in between meals. Crackers, pretzels, goldfish etc. suppress the appetite and basically ruin any opportunity for a good meal. It's best to not have them in the house.

Building a healthy relationship with food is like any other relationship. There's give and take. Some relationships are better than others, and some should be avoided entirely. We can't survive without food and the more we know what serves us right, the better off we'll be.

I've added a "pin it" button if there is something you'd like to pin and share from this blog, and I welcome anyone to follow my pinboards. It's like browsing through magazines with your friends. I love it!
